How to Make Apple Jelly at Home

Apple jelly is a delicious, smooth spread with a natural sweetness and a hint of tartness. It’s perfect for toast, pancakes, desserts, or even as a glaze for meats. Making it at home is easier than you think and requires only a few ingredients.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 kg (about 6–7 medium) apples
  • 4 cups water
  • 3–4 cups sugar (depending on the juice extracted)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

(Apples naturally contain pectin, so you usually don’t need added commercial pectin. If you want a firmer set, you may add it.)

Step-by-Step Method

1. Prepare the Apples

  • Wash the apples thoroughly.
  • Cut them into quarters—there’s no need to peel or core them, as the skins and seeds have pectin that helps the jelly set.

2. Extract the Juice

  • Place the apple pieces in a large pot.
  • Add 4 cups of water.
  • Simmer on medium heat for 30–40 minutes until the apples are soft and mushy.
  • Strain the mixture through a jelly bag, muslin cloth, or fine strainer. Let it drip naturally (do not press the pulp, as it can make the jelly cloudy).

3. Measure and Add Sugar

  • Measure the apple juice you’ve collected.
  • For every 1 cup of juice, add about ¾–1 cup sugar.
  • Return the juice and sugar to the pot. Add the lemon juice.

4. Boil the Mixture

  • Stir the mixture and bring it to a boil.
  • Cook until the jelly reaches setting point (around 105°C or 220°F).
  • To test: Place a small spoonful on a chilled plate. If it wrinkles when pushed with a finger, it’s ready.

5. Store the Jelly

  • Pour the hot jelly into sterilized glass jars.
  • Seal immediately with lids.
  • Allow them to cool at room temperature. Store in a cool, dry place.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use slightly underripe apples—they contain more natural pectin.
  • Don’t rush the straining step; letting it drip slowly keeps the jelly clear.
  • If the jelly is too runny, reboil it for a few more minutes.

How to Enjoy Apple Jelly

  • Spread on toast or parathas for a quick breakfast.
  • Use as a glaze for roasted chicken or pork.
  • Mix into desserts, cakes, or pastries for extra flavor.

✨ With just apples, sugar, and lemon, you can prepare a batch of golden, crystal-clear apple jelly right in your kitchen. It’s a natural and satisfying way to preserve the taste of fresh apples.
